Berkeley Springs, West Virginia Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

The tiny town of Berkeley Springs is located on the northern edge of West Virginia's eastern panhandle, just over the border from Maryland, and only two hours from Washington, D.C. Founded in 1776, this historic town was originally known as "Bath', which is fitting given the town's renown for its mineral springs. There's plenty to see and do in this small town from art galleries to interesting shops, spas to fine dining.

Berkeley Springs first became popular when George Washington surveyed the area in 1748. For years, Washingtonians came to Berkeley Springs each summer. The spring waters still flow at a constant 74 degrees at the base of Warm Springs Ridge, the original spa and the country's oldest. Visitors may drink the mineral water, take some home in a jar or wade in the ancient stone pools at the country's smallest state park. Berkeley Springs State Park includes a Roman bathhouse with museum and swimming pool. Those wanting a contemporary spa experience have five full-service sites to choose from.

Walking tours past historic buildings in the downtown with sites frequented by George Washington are popular. Ten art galleries dot the downtown and a vintage movie theater runs first run films. Dozens of unique shops line the town streets including a row facing the historic park.

Outdoor recreation centers on 6,100-acre Cacapon Resort State Park with swimming, a sand beach, fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding and tennis. A Robert Trent Jones-designed 18 hole, par 72 golf course is the park's star attraction. There is no camping but there are cabins available.

Berkeley Springs' dining options range from Fairfax Coffee House to Grandma's Country Kitchen to gourmet dinners at Highlawn Inn. Nightlife includes concerts by the local community choir or the town band. Enjoy live music at the Red Guitar, Tari's Caf‚ & Gallery or the Troubadour, home of the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame.

Berkeley Springs is located about two hours northwest of Washington, DC in the state's eastern panhandle. Take I-270 north to I-70 west to Rt. 9.
