World-class museums, important historic sites and a top-notch cultural calendar earn Philadelphia the right to a place in the great East Coast city pantheon.
Pittsburgh's main fine arts respository is the Carnegie Museum of Art, a facility that has had, since its founding in 1896, contemporary art at its heart. CMOA's permanent collection includes a number of works from artists of the last century, from Impressionist and Post-Impressionist pieces to late 20th-century works. Also on show in its galleries are a selection of decorative arts from America and Europe and a Hall of Sculpture, modeled after the Parthenon. There is also an architectural focus here, as showcased in the Heinz Architectural Center and the Hall of Architecture. Docent-led tours, educational programs and other fine arts events are offered regularly.
